En el Berlín postcaída del muro, un grupo de antiguos anarquistas, quienes años atrás se dedicaron a colocar bombas en construcciones deshabitadas para protestar por la situación política que les tocó vivir, se enfrentan a un grave problema: una de las bombas ha sido descubierta por el agente inmobiliario que comercializa el edificio. Con un gran sentido del humor, el director alemán Gregor Schnitzler parte de un tema tan delicado como el anarquismo para elaborar una estupenda sátira política y social que invita a reflexionar sobre la realidad contemporánea, la alemana en particular y la occidental en general. El derrumbe del sistema soviético, la unión de las dos Alemanias, la pérdida de los ideales y el desencanto que es la base del mundo poscapitalista se presenta con ironía en una película que logra equilibrar el drama de sus personajes con el humor que permite distanciarse de los hechos para llevar a cabo una reflexión seria sobre nuestras vidas.

When Revolutionaries Mature and Have to Face Up

hat to Do in Case of Fire" is metallic and inhuman, and its bone-deep willingness to do anything to entertain is exhausting. The attempt at social (and socialist) satire, which starts in mid-1980's Berlin, uses the energy of anarchy to propel it forward. The briskness that "Fire" generates as it sets up its story — a band of fight-the-power squatters cause civil unrest by planting bombs in abandoned buildings — shows that the German director Gregor Schnitzer has the skills to develop his narrative with coercive aplomb.
He makes this bunch of punks so well scrubbed that they could have been the original VJ's on MTV. "Group 36" could be a nihilist clubhouse. Products of schematic casting and engineered to woo an audience's heart, they live in happy squalor, setting off bombs and making noise during the tumult a few years before the Berlin Wall came down. (Mr. Schnitzler cheats on the fact that his actors are a little old for their activities by printing the establishing scenes with a minimal amount of color.) "They are always inebriated or numbed by mind-altering drugs," the opening narration tells us about the willful pack caught up in its mindless, home-brewed anarchism.
The wild-eyed Hotte (Martin Feifel), in particular, is so brimming with juice and ideas, he can't sit still. This group has the blithe self-absorption of youth, filming their own adventures and obsessing over their manifestos. One of these theories for social disturbance is "the five golden rules of any military act of resistance," as articulated by the cleft-chinned Tim (Til Schweiger). The rules include "keep it simple" and "claiming responsibility" (calling media attention to their acts).
These two rules come back to haunt the group when 15 years later one of the bombs that Group 36 set in an empty structure ("Rule 5: Occupy abandoned buildings") is inadvertently detonated by a real estate agent eager to sell the place. Their building, it turns out, is in a neighborhood once on the border of revolution, which is now about to be gentrified as are some of the old gang.
The director ingeniously plays out the passage of time since 1987, when the bomb was set, by showing the seasons blow past the site. He gets a dexterous assist from the cinematographer Andreas Berger, who has a marvelous ability to exploit space, encapsulating the film's territorial imperatives. "Hear it: that's historical silence," the real estate agent (Sandra Nedeleff) chatters before a booby-trap explosion goes off, setting the plot in motion.
And then "Fire" breaks out in earnest — "responsibility" becomes an important issue for the erstwhile bomb makers in ways they had never imagined. Tim and Hotte are still active anarchists; at one point, Tim, who now fights the power in leather pants, hides out in a department store and throws open its doors after closing time so the proletariat can help itself to the goods. Hotte, whose eyes still have enough angry candlepower to set anything in his sightline ablaze, is now wheelchair-bound. He and Tim are roommates (squatmates actually), and the building owner is desperate to get them out so he can make money off the rapidly changing neighborhood.
Their fellow revolutionaries have gone the way of all bourgeoisie; they're functioning and acquisitive. Maik (Sebastian Blomberg) is now a heartless ad exec. Nele (Nadja Uhl) is a single mom who uses the remnants of her youthful nutty streak to entertain her kids. (Her little girl looks at the outcast Tim, who slices the child's knotted shoelaces with a switchblade, and blurts, "Are you wacko?")
And in a truly corny turn of circumstances, the once febrile Terror (Matthias Matschke) lives up to his nickname: he's now a lawyer and tells the group that the statute of limitations won't apply to their actions; the explosion will count as attempted murder. Detective Manowsky (Klaus Löwitsch), a no-necked, bald Javert, takes up the scent: "If any left-wing creeps start in about human rights, arrest them," he sneers.

Sinopsis: Tim, Hotte, Maik, Nele, Flo y el hiperactivo Terror son seis jóvenes anarquistas berlineses a los que gusta enfrentarse a los grupos de acción policiaca en la línea de fuego del Berlín de 1987. El grupo instala una bomba casera en una residencia del distrito de Grünewald, que finalmente nunca explota. La vida en Alemania cambia, y con ella, la de todos sus hijos... menos para Tim y Hotte.
En pleno año 2001, ambos comparten el derruido departamento que más de una década atrás sirviera como su guarida. El edificio está abandonado, casi en ruinas, y el barrio ya no es el mismo, sin embargo, comparten aun un ideal político y una amistad a toda prueba, cosa que el resto de sus compinches han olvidado para dedicarse cada uno a su propia vida, alejándose por completo.
